Linux Software Releases, February 2015

We open this month edition with FBReader, a generic ebook reader that supports most, if not all, ebook formats. After a short introduction of this software package, we continue with the list of the projects released during the month of February, 2015.

Contents:

Project of the Month: FBReader

Originally developed for Sharp Zaurus, FBReader is one of the most popular ebook readers for Linux platform. Official packages are available for many Linux distributions, including Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and openSUSE, so you can install it using your distro’s package manager:

  • Debian/Ubuntu/Mint: sudo apt-get install fbreader
  • Fedora: sudo yum install fbreader
  • OpenSUSE: sudo zypper install fbreader

The reader supports most popular ebook formats, including ePUB, FictionBook, OpenReader, PDF, RTF, OEB, unencrypted MOBI, HTML, and plain text. It also supports direct reading from TAR, ZIP, GZIP, and BZIP2 archives. This ability can be useful in accessing text and e-book documents stored in compressed file formats.

Despite its spartan interface, FBReader is loaded with many features. You can tweak the reader to your liking, modify spacing and alignment, as well as change the background color and font setting. It allows you to catalog the ebooks on your hard drive, or you can access thousands of free literature titles available on the Internet using Network Library search feature. It also offers a tagging feature that helps you keep your library organized.

Autoconf Archive

The GNU Autoconf Archive is a collection of more than 450 macros for GNU Autoconf that have been contributed as free software by friendly supporters of the cause from all over the Internet. Every single one of those macros can be re-used without imposing any restrictions whatsoever on the licensing of the generated configure script. In particular, it is possible to use all those macros in configure scripts that are meant for non-free software. This policy is unusual for a Free Software Foundation project. The FSF firmly believes that software ought to be free, and software licenses like the GPL are specifically designed to ensure that derivative work based on free software must be free as well. In case of Autoconf, however, an exception has been made, because Autoconf is at such a pivotal position in the software development tool chain that the benefits from having this tool available as widely as possible outweigh the disadvantage that some authors may choose to use it, too, for proprietary software …(more)

This library provides functions for manipulating Unicode strings and for manipulating C strings according to the Unicode standard …(more)
