Linux Software Releases, March 2015

We start this month edition with Audacity, a powerful open-source multi-track audio recorder and editor. After a short introduction of this software package, we continue with the list of the projects released during the month of March 2015.

Project of the Month: Audacity

Audacity is an open source sound recorder and editor that allows the user to record, modify, and export audio files. It is the most popular audio-editing application for Linux platform. Available in all major distributions, Audacity is installed using the package manager:

  • Debian/Ubuntu/Mint: apt-get install audacitiy
  • Fedora: yum install audacity
  • OpenSUSE: zypper install audacity

The application supports a large number of formats, such as WAV, AIFF, FLAC, MP2, MP3, Ogg Vorbis. AC3, M4A/M4R (AAC) and WMA are supported using external software libraries.

The primary function of Audacity is editing sound files. It offers an outstanding array of editing tools including cutting, copying, splicing and mixing sounds together. It also includes numerous effects.

The latest version 2.1.0, was released on March 29, 2015. It brings in support to preview LADSPA, VST, and Audio Unit effects, much improved noise reduction and noise removal, redesigned meter toolbar, and spectral selection in Spectogram view, lots of other improvements and bug fixes.
